Chris Christie and the Rump Parliament of Conventions

Despite a political career now in shambles, Governor Chris Christie of New Jersey made it clear last night that he still delights in the role of attack dog.

It’s a telling symbol of the Republican Party under the spell of Trump.

Chris Christie and Charlie Baker face very similar political circumstances – Republican Governors in deeply blue Northeastern states.  Mitt Romney strongly considered Christie for his presidential ticket.  But when all three had to decide on a Donald Trump Presidency, at one of the last junctures where he can be derailed from the GOP nomination, only the Massachusetts men said “no.”  If Trump wins, Christie is culpable.  Governors Baker and Romney decided quite differently.

So, yes, the GOP needs more Baker and more Romney.  It needs more Massachusetts and far less Jersey.

The GOP establishment has been cowering in horror at the Trump-Cruz insurrection and hoping someone can stop them. This is Marco Rubio's moment to prove that he is the moderate immoderate who can do the job.

The Republican debate participants all projected seriousness last night, but understanding them is pure classic comedy.
