The volatility of this election has threatened to pull the two party system apart. Trump was able to become the Republican nominee despite all the best efforts of the party's leadership to block his meteoric rise, and now Bernie Sander Democrats are protesting the party, claiming the primary system has been rigged in Hillary Clinton’s favor. These inter party squabbles and candidate upheavals has led voters and party members to look beyond the traditional two party system to third parties where they feel like their voices can be heard.
Even though hatred for the traditional way of things seems to be at an all time high, this is far from the first time an election has brought the two party system into question. Princeton historian and the author of the new book, "The Politicians & The Egalitarians: The Hidden History of American Politics," joined guest host Peter Kadzis on The Scrum to discuss the history of America’s two party system and the inevitability and necessity of partisanship.
