Juliette Kayyem talks in her campaign video.

First, a disclaimer: The Scrum isn’t going to become an all-Juliette-Kayyem-all-the-time space. That said, I do want to make a point about the subtext of Kayyem’s new web video. On the face of it, “Belong” is a straightforward ode to American and Massachusetts inclusivity and the way it's helped Kayyem's family. Take a look:

On a more subtle level, though, “Belong” is also a clear bit of pushback against the idea that Kayyem doesn’t belong in the governor's race. As Slate’s Hannah Rosin notes, now that Martha Coakley has announced her candidacy, Kayyem is running up against the notion that, at least on the Democratic side, there’s only room for one female candidate. (If that sounds familiar, it might be because of the recent Boston mayoral contest, in which some supporters of Charlotte Golar Richie tried to get other candidates of color to drop out to boost her chances.)

At least to my eye, Kayyem’s new video is as much about publicly rejecting that argument as it is about cloaking herself in a mantle of patriotic inclusivity. “We all belong to this conversation,” Kayyem says at the end of the video, referring to the governor’s race. “Everyone has to be welcomed to the table and to the conversation. And that’s where we end up with the best solutions.”

Here, at least, the video seems like a follow-up to the Kayyem camp’s recent complaints about political cynicism. (“Governor Patrick was told by the establishment that he couldn’t win election to governor, and it’s the same thinking that Juliette is running up against,” Matt Patton, Kayyem’s communications director, told me earlier this week. “She’s fighting against the people who don’t want to give everyone in this commonwealth a chance.”) In “Belong,” Kayyem signals that she's not going anywhere — and that she'll turn any efforts to push her out of the race into fodder for her campaign.
