It might have been a moment of grace right before the holiday season of a disgraceful year.

Vice President-elect Mike Pence was booed when he entered the theater in New York on Friday to see Hamilton.

As he was leaving, a member of the cast called to him to stay, told the crowd not to boo, and addressed him as Sir. The actor read the following statement:

“You know, we have a guest in the audience this evening. Vice President elect Pence, I see you walking out but I hope you hear just a few more moments. There’s nothing to boo, ladies and gentlemen. There’s nothing to boo. We’re all hear to share a story of love. We have a message for you, sir, we hope that you will hear us out.

And I encourage everybody to pull out your phones and tweet and post because this message needs to be spread far and wide.

We, sir — we — are the diverse America who are alarmed and anxious that your new administration will not protect us, our planet, our children, our parents, or defend us and uphold our inalienable rights,” he said. “We truly hope that this show has inspired you to uphold our American values and to work on behalf of all of us. All of us.

Thank you for truly seeing this show, this wonderful American story told by a diverse group of men, women of different colors, creeds and orientations.”

Predictably, our wildly unhinged President-elect took to twitter and, in a series of tweets, claimed Pence was harassed and ordered the cast to apologize

A man with a modicum of class would have thanked the cast for its message, assured everyone he intends to govern on behalf of all the people, and sent along Thanksgiving greetings.

Our hateful President-elect is not such a man.

Booing elected officials in settings such as a theater is a breach of personal decorum but it goes with the territory, however distasteful it might be.

If you need to ask why anyone would register dislike or disapproval toward the new Vice President in a theatrical setting, you paid no attention to the execrable campaign Donald Trump ran.

Yes, of course, our new President is trying to distract from his unethical, and, it appears, unlawful actions regarding his myriad business interests. It seems he has already set himself up for a simple article of impeachment for violating Article I, Section 9, Clause 8 of the Constitution.

And that should be our focus as vigilant citizens. Sadly, if we chase his lack of decorum each day we’ll be caught in an endless loop.

The Hamilton incident is not the most important issue this past week, just the perfect symbol of the Trump presidency.
