Well, it's official. Amherst College has chosen a new mascot.

The private school in Western Massachusetts announced its first official mascot on Monday.

The Mammoths will replace the unofficial mascot, Lord Jeff.

Lord Jeffrey Amherst was the British general who in 1763 proposed giving smallpox-infected blankets to Native Americans and whose likeness fourteen months ago was banished from campus amid protests by students and alumni.

The Mammoths was one of five finalists, beating out the Valley Hawks and the Fighting Poets.

The new mascot is a nod to a prehistoric mammoth skeleton currently on display in the College's museum of natural history.
